Thanks for this. Unfortunately, most “self made men” come from privilege. Some acknowledge the fact, some insist that it’s all down to them. There are some, as well, who find great success because they are tenacious, take risks, find their purpose early on — or fight because they have nothing to lose — and because they happen to be intelligent, open and wise!
In the UK, here was a golden few years where there were opportunities for everyone across the spectrum. I was one who was encouraged to move my ambitions higher by enlightened teachers and employers. The 70’s and 80’s were problematic but the class barriers were not as apparent as they were before or have become now.
In the 90’s that started to change. I am an ex teacher who witnessed first hand the battle that educators have now to try to offer similar experiences to their students. It all comes down to money in the end and those who have it will always do well.
There always have been and there still are stories of rags to riches — or simply rags to comfortable. We are too many now though — resources are more scarce and the wealthy are pulling up the drawbridge, yet, for the intrinsic self made human, there is still a good life to be had.
It just takes intention — and balls!
