Art Matters

“There’s something afoot in the wind” as Baldrick famously commented…

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s appearance at the Met Ball in a Vivienne Westwood inspired punk dress the other night, was all I needed to convince me that we are waking up.

I am formulating a book right now. It uses art and making as a call to action which is something I have always done with students physically — and now I am looking for a larger audience for the outrageously anarchic message that doing and making change things.

Because Art has become asinine, in my opinion, — pretty — something to distract on the whole.

If I see another motivational saying presented on a bright coloured watercolour background — hand- written of course — a calming hand on the shoulder, wrap it up warmly and give it a cup of tea concern for your mental well being image, I will throw up!

Don’t get me wrong! There is nothing wrong with the plethora of well-meaning self-help images out there. They are indeed, soothing and helpful and bring joy in times of stress. Like hugging a tree or eating a slice of gluten-free cake — a quick fix — a plaster for the cut.

AOC’s message; “Tax the Rich”, written in blood red on a white dress cut through the apathy that night. Anarchy in the Met. God save the Billionaires — forced to look because the woman is beautiful as well as intelligent and opinionated and you cannot…
